CONNECTIVE SECOND-LIFE

Los angeles, california

IMAGINING A PAST REALITY WHERE THE CURRENT SCHOOL THAT OCCUPES THE SITE WAS INSTEAD BUILT AROUND THE STERNBERG HOUSE, THE PROJECT PROPOSES HOW THE PRIVATE HOUSE OF THE PAST COULD BE RE-BORN AS A CENTRAL HUB FOR SERVICING THE SURROUNDING AREA OF THE PRESENT.

CHILDREN SLIP THEIR TEXTBOOKS INTO THEIR BAGS, LEAVE THEIR BEDROOMS, AND WALK OUTSIDE, SEEING OTHER CHILDREN AND MEMBERS OF THE AREA OCCUPYING THE PLAYFUL COVES OF THE CURVED WALLS. NO LONGER ISOLATED, THE SOUNDS OF LAUGHTER CAN BE HEARD IN BETWEEN THE SPLASHES OF THE PUBLIC POOLS THAT POPULATE THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE. RUNNING, MINGLING, LEARNING, THE CHILDREN FILL AND ACTIVATE THE ROOMS OF THE STERNBERG HOUSE AND ITS ADJACENT SPACES. THIS IS A NEW PROPOSAL FOR TRANSITIONAL HOUSING.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE EXISTING CONDITION, THE PROJECT ESTABLISHES A NEW INTERFACE BETWEEN THE STERNBERG HOUSE AND ITS CONTEXT, MAKING A PROPOSAL FOR A SECOND-LIFE. FITTING WITHIN THE CURRENT SITE CONDITION OF THE SCHOOL, THE PROJECT CONVERTS THE SINGLE RESIDENCY TO ONE THAT PROVIDES UNIQUE TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR LOCAL UNDER-SERVICED CHILDREN. WITHIN THIS TRANSFORMATION THE PROJECT ARGUES FOR A RECONNECTION OF THE STERNBERG HOUSE TO THE PUBLIC REALM, BECOMING A HUB OF ENGAGEMENT AND ASSISTANCE WITHIN ITS SURROUDINGS.

WITHIN ITS NEW PROGRAM, THE PROJECT’S ORGANIZATIONAL SCHEME APPLIES NEUTRA’S ORIGINAL LANGUAGE TO THE CURRENT SITE OF THE SCHOOL AND VIS VERSA. BY MANIPULATING NEUTRA’S IDEAS SURROUNDING RADII AND THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE CAR, THE PROJECT ADAPTS THIS EXISTING LANGUAGE TO IDEAS OF THE COMMUNAL GATHERING SPACE. THE PROJECT TAKES THE POSITION OF BLURRING THE LINE BETWEEN THESE CONDITIONS, A PUSH-PULL BETWEEN THE STIE AND EXISTING LANGUAGE, RESULTING IN A NEW CONDITION FOR PUBLIC INTERACTION WITHIN AND AROUND THE STERNBERG HOUSE.
